I can’t remember having much problem sleeping until around 2019 - I’m not sure if it was a snoring ex partner or financial stress that caused me to stop sleeping well. But the nail in the coffin was when I had a spine injury in 2021. Goodbye good nights sleep. I managed a couple of good nights in hotels when away for work but otherwise I’ve not felt properly rested for years.. until the last few weeks. Read on if you want to know my optimal and all natural bed set up….

When I moved I couldn’t shake the smell of mustiness from my mattress from my old place. Every time I went to bed I could smell it and it bothered me massively. I’d also got rid of my old topper at some point and think lying on just the mattress itself was giving me terrible shoulder and neck problems. I spent money on numerous pillows and just never quite got it right. My old mattress wasn’t awful, it’s just the time passes quickly and before you know it it’s ten years old. At the time of buying it I had been conscious about buying a mattress that was mostly natural materials but having now read so much information on it, it was probably irrelevant what 60% of it was made from if doused in toxic fire retardants.

Anyway, back to the present day and after a really bad spell of sleep last month I realised enough was enough. I’d sold some bits on Marketplace, Vinted and eBay and had a pot of money saved to buy a new mattress and finally ordered the one I’d settled on after hours of research (more below). Since the mattress has arrived I’ve been tweaking my bed set up until I finally found the sweet spot - I’ve enjoyed glorious nights sleep for the past week and I’ll tell you what has done it:

Mattress - Snoozel Green

I think you probably all know me enough by now to know that when I decide I’m going to buy something I research it to every end! I’m always looking for something that is on a mid price point but is kind to the planet and to me and won’t need replacing anytime soon. Being as we spend so much time in bed where are bodies are resting and resetting it makes sense to give it the best environment possible. I read numerous articles about foams, latex and other mattress materials - my conclusion as that not only are they not brilliant for us, especially as questionable fire retardants are used - but they are also bad news for the planet in both production and a waste point of view. When we’re done with these mattresses they go on to hang around in the world for a very long time so I wanted one that would biodegrade and not have a lasting negative impact.

Hours of research whittled it down to a few brands but what kept coming out top for me was Snoozel Green. I loved the information on their website and the price point was right for me. Especially as they offer a rejuvenated mattress scheme (scroll down to find the rejuvenated mattresses listed on the left) - the mattresses that are sent back from their 101 night trial are sold on with sizeable discounts. I ummed and ahhed about buying a mattress someone else had slept on but I needn’t have worried as the mattress was spotless and had been cleaned to a saleable standard. I decided to go for a Grade A which is a near perfect mattress. Have a read about Snoozel Green here.

When the mattress arrived it felt comfortable but quite firm and I was still having shoulder and neck problems. So a few weeks later on recommendation of customer services I ordered the topper to go with the mattress and this changed the game completely - the bed was now absolutely perfect and I woke the next morning without any aches. It did increase the depth of an already thick mattress so be warned, you’ll need deep sheets! I still wasn’t sleeping brilliantly though… but it turned out to be nothing to do with the mattress…

bedding

When I got the keys to the house I treated myself to a new duvet made from recycled bottles. It was lush - it felt like down and crinkled satisfyingly in my linen duvet cover. But I was waking in the night hot regardless of the season and having to throw it off me. Near me is the Peak Village shopping centre where there is a Woolroom showroom - for months I had been eying up a wool duvet. So many people had messaged me on Instagram to say their wool duvet was game changing. Because I’ve been doing some work at Peak Village I was lucky to catch a very limited amount of duvets that came in discounted as they’d been in a photoshoot. Oh. My. Word. My mind is blown. I honestly skipped out of bed the next morning - I hadn't had such a good nights sleep for so long. I was warm and cosy but my temperature stayed regulated through the night and I didn't experience any perimenopausal night sweats. It wasn't a one off as I have slept like a log the past week with the new duvet - even though I’m premenstrual where I usually experience broken sleep. I’m absolutely delighted and teamed with the new mattress I’m a happy girl! I went for the Deluxe duvet - I figured it was best to invest in one I could wash myself. The benefits of having wool in your bedding are wide - it’s anti bacterial, antimicrobial, dust mite free, it’s biodegradable and it’s temperature regulating meaning it will keep you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot. I went for the medium so I can use it all year round and layer a wool blanket on top if needed.

Some months back I’d also bought a Woolroom pillow. I really do love it - again my head is kept regulated through the night and the dust mite free properties are great for me as I’m allergic. But I was finding it wasn't quite supportive enough so I took one of the pads out of a Bright-r pillow I had and inserted among the wool and the pillow is now absolutely perfect.

My duvet cover is from Bed Threads - again I researched different brands of linen bedding and for the price point and the reviews I ended up with Bed Threads - plus I just loved the rust stripe (which I don’t think they do anymore). I’m delighted with it, it’s now 9 months down the line and it still looks good, it washes well and I wouldn’t be without it!

Bringing Earthing Technology to bedtime

I’ve raved about my Earthing sheet since having it. Essentially it harnesses the science of having your bare feet on the earth to you while you’re sleeping. I’ve written a full post including what happened when we tested it with a voltmeter and it’s well worth a read!
